21-year-old Paul Verbnjak from Carinthia won the 3rd edition of the Kitzbühel Radmarathon after 216 kilometers and 4600 meters in altitude. In the women’s race, the German Eva Schien won convincingly.
“I had a flat tire in between and lost a minute,” said Paul Verbnjak. However, the 21-year-old was able to quickly make up the deficit and celebrated his first victory at the Kitzbühel Radmarathon. “I learned from last year and didn’t fully attack at the beginning of the ascent to the Kitzbüheler Horn,” said the Carinthian, who is considered one of Austria’s most promising ski mountaineers in winter. At the beginning, rain had bothered the athletes. “The first three hours were ice cold,” said the winner, who won after 6:33 hours ahead of his compatriot Daniel Ganahl and the Canadian Jack Burke. Last year, Verbnjak had to give way to Johnny Hoogerland, the Dutchman finished fourth this year. In the women’s race, the German Eva Schien from the Radsportteam Gaimersheim won convincingly with a 24-minute lead. For the first time, there were two finish lines at the KRM. In addition to the “KRM Klassik” route
with 216 kilometers and 4600 meters in altitude with the finish at the Horn, the participants could also finish in Kitzbühel city center after 209 kilometers and 3800 meters in altitude. Daniel Pechtl (Ö) and Maria Pechlaner from Merano won on this “KRM Kitz” route.
