Andy Schleck: “Kitzbühel Cycling Marathon has enormous potential”
The 3rd edition of the Kitzbühel Cycling Marathon will take place on Sunday, August 27, 2023. Not only ex-Tour de France winner and KRM European ambassador Andy Schleck is enthusiastic in the run-up.
“The Kitzbühel Cycling Marathon is already a mega-event in its third edition and it has enormous potential,” says Andy Schleck. The Luxembourger should know. In 2010, the now 38-year-old won the Tour de France and became acquainted with Kitzbühel during his career: “I already rode the Kitzbüheler Horn in 2005 at the Austria Tour.” The then CSC professional finished 16th in the 10km time trial from Kitzbühel up to Austria’s most legendary cycling mountain. “The mountain was extremely difficult, that has stuck in my memory,” says Schleck.
“KRM fits perfectly with Kitzbühel”
“As an enthusiastic fan of the Tour de France, I am particularly pleased that the former Tour winner Andy Schleck is supporting our Kitzbühel Cycling Marathon as European ambassador,” says Dr. Klaus Winkler. The mayor continues: “Kitzbühel has a decades-long tradition in cycling. Therefore, I am particularly pleased that with the cycling marathon we have been able to establish an event that fits perfectly with Kitzbühel. As in winter the ski races, the cycling marathon is a great challenge for all participants. The same applies to the Kitzbühel Cycling Marathon as on the Streif: Anyone who sees the finish in Kitzbühel is a winner.”
“Likeable ambassador”
With Dr. Viktoria Veider-Walser, Kitzbühel’s TVB managing director says: “The Kitzbühel Cycling Marathon as a selective amateur competition fits seamlessly into Kitzbühel’s strategic orientation as a sports city with a high-quality product range in the Outdoor Active sector. With Andy Schleck, we were able to win a likeable and highly professional ambassador for our event for the first time this year.”
The KRM can boast over 1000 starters this year. “We are very pleased about this record number of participants with many national and international riders. This shows that the event is on a very good path. We would like to invite everyone to see these sporting achievements for themselves along the route,” say the organizers Franz Steinberger and Marina
Janda.
“Special cycling relationship”
Kitzbühel and its region have a special relationship with cycling. “This summer, an attractive bike trail offer has been created in the area of our Sonnenrast cable car and the Streiteckmulde including bike transport. This is an excellent example of how successful local and TVB-wide cooperation can work. With events such as the Kitzbühel Cycling Marathon, we can further increase the awareness of our cycling and bike region,” say the board duo of Bergbahn Kitzbühel, Mag. Anton Bodner and Mag.
Christian Wörister. Jürgen Kleinhappl from the Harisch Hotels praises: “Andy Schleck is the figurehead of this year’s Kitzbühel Cycling Marathon. But we are also very pleased that many local top riders will be at the start. The riders appreciate the very good service and very good catering they receive at the KRM.”
